Marianna Day Massey brings over eight years of experience as a staff photographer, picture editor, and photographers' manager to ZUMA Press. As Senior Picture Editor and ZUMA’s Photographer Liaison, Marianna works on long-term editing projects and is in charge of recruiting new talent as well as overseeing ZUMA’s large group of contract photographers. Her experience, both behind the lens and at the editor's desk, gives her insight into what the industry is looking for as well as what a shooter needs to do to get published.
Born and raised in the South, Marianna Day Massey moved to the West Coast after graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Photographic Journalism. Marianna spent a number of years as a staff photographer with The Daily Pilot in Costa Mesa, California, a subsidiary of the Los Angeles Times. From there she moved on to freelance for Orange County publications for two years before joining ZUMA Press in 2001 to pursue her photography and her interest in editing. Marianna has also worked with Pulitzer Prize winning sports photographer Rick Rickman as his editor on many assignments and for the agency NewSport as a picture editor for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
When not at the office, Marianna continues to shoot for ZUMA Press, covering news events, current trends in society, travel and entertainment as well as documentary projects for www.zreportage.com, a division of ZUMA Press. She also freelances for The Age, The Australian and The Centralian Advocate newspapers based in Australia. Her work has appeared in many major news magazines, including TIME, Newsweek, VIEW, and US News and World Report, among others. Her interest in many different photographic subjects has taken her around the world, from Argentina to the streets of Paris. She works a few months out of the year in Los Angeles, California, but currently resides in the outback town of Alice Springs, Australia.
