Wandering, sometimes aimlessly, along my career path, I have been piecing together a living from the photography industry for over 15 years. Starting out during the final misguided years of college (philosophy & ecology, not photography), I began photographing for outdoor adventure sports magazines and, soon after, for related outdoor companies. The majority of my recent work is now focused on long-term documentary projects exploring social and environmental themes.
In the 15+ years since I began working full time as a photographer, I have worked on a long list of editorial, commercial, and personal projects. My interests have always been in documentary photography and doing long-term, in-depth personal projects, and my editorial and art work usually derives from these. My current work focuses on social and environmental themes and recent efforts include a decade-long project on local and sustainable food and farming, a personal series on the social landscape of suburban American family life, and a long-term, multi-media project documenting the community-based grassroots campaigns of Rare Conservation in the developing tropics around the world.
My first solo exhibition was in Santa Barbara, CA in 1996 and recently I have had my work on display in a number of venues including at a solo and group show at Spike Gallery in New York City, an exhibition for the School of Forestry at Yale University in New Haven, CT, and a documentary series of artists Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison at work for the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA.
I am currently represented by Ferrin Gallery.
I am currently moonlighting as picture editor for Orion, a 25-year old non-profit, non-commercial, bimonthly magazine of nature, culture, and place and am a contributing photography editor at Berkshire Living, an award-winning regional magazine in western Massachusetts. I am an advisory board member for Blue Earth Alliance and sit on many compentition and portfolio review panels. I am a long-standing professional member of the National Press Photographers Association and accredited with Canon Professional Services. I teach the occasional workshop, lead the occasional photography tour, and give the occasional lecture.
